Creative Zen on Hardy Heron Ubuntu Linux

An upcoming trip to DC motivated me to search for ways to upload videos on my Creative Zen mp3 player.  While Gnomad2 is good for managing audio, it doesn’t yet handle video uploads.  All the applications referred to are available through the Synaptic package manager.

  1. Use iriverter to convert existing videos to the correct codec and screen resolution.  “Options/device/Creative/Zen Vision:M” selects the correct output format.  I had to follow kenjiru’s instructions on this page to get iriverter to run on Hardy Heron.
  2. Use mtp-tools to inspect and upload video files.

On the whole, I like the Zen as an occasional mp3 player.  The lack of video fast-forward is bad, but the device does appears to remember where you left off watching the movie.
